In the ancient days of Greece and Rome, when one passed away that person had to pay Charon, the Ferryman,
for safe passage over the river Styx into the afterlife.
This tradition was passed down over the centuries.
Sailors would leave a coin at the base of the mast to ensure that Charon would still be paid if they were lost at sea.
This tradition made its way back into the modern world during the Viet Nam War. Leaving a coin on the headstone
of a fallen brother was a way to quietly let them,
and the family, know that their comrade wasn't forgotten.
Each denomination of coin represents a different aspect of the relationship between the visitor and the deceased.
